The No. 9 Chevrolet of Chase Elliott failed pre-race NASCAR technical inspection twice at Darlington Raceway on Saturday.

The team will no longer be allowed to select its pit stall for the Goodyear 400.

The loss of crew member Matt Barndt, the No. 9 car chief, will be a significant blow to Elliott's team.

Despite this setback, Elliott posted a single-lap time of 29.319 seconds in qualifying, claiming the third starting spot for Sunday's NASCAR event.

Elliott will hope to carry over his recent success to Darlington, a track where he's historically struggled, with a fifth-place ranking on the Cup Series leaderboard through five races, just 87 points behind leader Tyler Reddick.

And he has already amassed three top-10 finishes and two top-5s this season.

But Elliott conceded that Chevrolet's redesigned Cup Series body style is still taking some time to get used to.

So he's focusing on making subtle differences to improve his performance.

Elliott led only 13 laps this year, but he has routinely managed to navigate his way to the front of the pack.

Last week, he secured a second-place finish and 40 points at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"I love this place, I love coming over here," Elliott told reporters, referring to Darlington Raceway.

"It's such a cool racetrack, it has not been a good racetrack for me at all, I want it to love me back really bad."

Elliott's team has put a lot of effort into trying to improve at Darlington.

He hopes that this weekend is a step in the right direction.

With a solid performance last week, Elliott is looking to build on that and piece together a really solid weekend at Darlington.

The Goodyear 400 will be a challenging race, but Elliott is ready to take on the competition.

As of the latest NASCAR Cup Series leaderboard, Elliott is ranked fifth with 313 points, behind Tyler Reddick with 400 points.
